I am extremely distraught at right now. It’s two a.m. and I’m crying. There is a such a thing as labiaplasty. It’s a plastic surgery that involves the partial removal of the labia. This apparently makes it more attractive. I just now remembered learning about this a few years ago or so but it was called something else in the article I read, genital mutilation. This has increased dramatically in the past few years, notably so in the UK. According to this article, “A study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2009 revealed that there had been an almost 70% increase in the number of women having labiaplasty on the NHS on the previous year. There were 1,118 operations in 2008, compared with 669 in 2007 and 404 in 2006.” Women are paying to have part of their genitals cut off all for the sake of “beauty.” This also is mainly due to the expectation of some boys and men, and I use that word dubiously, who have had pornography set as the standard in their minds. This article by Soraya Chemaly talks more in-depth on this. There is a documentary on YouTube The Perfect Vagina that is really interesting and informational on what a “normal” vagina looks like, perceptions on what they are supposed to look like, and cultural views on these type of surgeries. My favorite part was about an art installation done by Jaime McCartney called The Great Wall of Vagina and it’s amazing. This is stuff that was never taught to the majority of young people during “sex ed” and most of us have no idea what is natural down there. Seriously go look at the vaginas (or vaginae according to Merriam-Webster) and see that like the people that own them, not one is alike.
